Get an ID

Students, faculty, and staff of Metro State University need their university ID card to:

  • access parking and other university facilities;
  • check out library materials at Metro State and other Minnesota State college and university libraries; and
  • access other services, such as printing.

Community members may also obtain a borrower card which allows them to check out materials and access computers at the Metro State University Library.

How to Get Your Card

To get your ID in person, visit the first-floor Information Commons Desk in the Library and Learning Center. Be prepared to provide your Star or Tech ID (students and employees only) and show an accepted form of ID from the list below. We will take your photograph and print your ID in a few minutes.

To get your ID online (students and employees only), complete the ID request form in the Service Portal. IDs requested online can be mailed to you or held at the library for pickup. Allow 7 to 10 days for mailing and processing.

Accepted Forms of ID

To obtain a card, patrons must present a government or business-issued photo ID.

  • Examples: Driver’s license, passport, employee or school photo ID card, tribal ID, IDs issued by Union Gospel Mission and Catholic Charities, IDs issued by the Consulate of Mexico.
  • May be expired if photo can be reasonably matched to the person applying for the card.

If a patron does not have a photo ID, acceptable alternatives include:

  • Other government-issued identification, such as a receipt or temporary printout issued by DMV dated no earlier than 6 weeks (42 days) from today’s date, Social Security card, or birth certificate.

If a Community Borrower is under 18 years old and does not have a photo ID, the minor’s legal guardian may vouch for their identity. The legal guardian must be present to show their own current or expired photo ID to prove their own identity.

Obtaining a Replacement Card

If your card has been lost or stolen, you can request a replacement in person or complete the ID request form in the Service Portal (students and employees only). Replacement cards can be issued without photo ID if:

  • Library staff can verify student/faculty/staff/patron photo in the system AND
  • The student/faculty/staff/patron can confirm any of the following: Tech ID, StarID, address, or phone number.

In certain cases, a replacement fee may be charged.

Note: Nursing badges are issued by Institutional Effectiveness and Technology (IET).
